TML Profiles: Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, Activist Turned Professional In Politics

Chief Okoi Obono-Obla is a lawyer of over twenty five years experience and his legal practice has spanned across various areas of law. He is a Human Rights Activist, Politician, Author, Anti-Corruption Crusader and Traditional Ruler.

 

His commitment in promoting respect for the rule of law has earned him several positions of authority in times past till date. At consecutive times, he was a Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Bar Association, Calabar Branch and Member of Human Rights and Legal Aid Committee and National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association respectively.

 
As a ardent lawyer of diversity, he was at various times Secretary, Financial Impropriety/ Verification Standing Committee of the Cross River State Government; Member, Board of Directors, Nigeria National Park Service; Member, Presidential Tribunal on African Petroleum Plc. He is presently a Non-Executive Commissioner at the Nigerian Communications Commission representing the south-south geo-political zone.

 
As a seasoned politician, he was a Cross River State gubernatorial candidate of National Conscience Party; Deputy National Secretary, Interim National Legal Adviser and Member, Board of Trustees of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change(CPC) respectively; Member/Secretary CPC Merger Committee; Co-Secretary Joint Inter Party Merger Committee that negotiated the formation of the All Progressives Congress(APC); Chairman, APC Bayelsa State Membership Registration Committee; Member, APC Presidential Campaign Council, Legal and Security Directorates and till date the Director, Legal & Documentation, Buhari Support Organization.

 
Chief Okoi Obono-Obla is the Special Assistant to the President on Prosecution with core mandate to compliment the prosecutorial functions of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution in ensuring timely and diligent prosecution.

 

Furthermore, he has developed a Strategic Plan: 2016-2019 for the Office of the Special Assistant to the President aimed at strengthening the objectives of the criminal justice system as well as enhancing the commitment of the government in the fight against corruption and other social vices. He is also by virtue of his office a member of the National Prosecution Coordination Committee.

 
Chief Okoi Obono-Obla is also the Acting Secretary of the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee, a Committee charged with the responsibility of ensuring effective and efficient application of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015. He is also designate Non Executive Commissioner (South South) of the Nigerian Communications Commission.
